Vagal Nerve TLC~from heart rhythm and digestion to emotional regulation and even muscle tension

There are moments in life when the body feels overwhelmed, when stress lingers in the shoulders, digestion feels unsettled, sleep becomes shallow, or emotions seem to sit just beneath the surface. Often, these experiences trace back to one central place: the nervous system!

Neuro-Auricular Technique (NAT) is a specialized protocol designed to support and stimulate the intricate communication pathways between the brain and body. Rather than forcing change, NAT works by gently encouraging the brainstem and upper cervical spine to re-engage, reconnect, and communicate more clearly. This is a gentle way to support your entire nervous system.

Why the Base of the Skull Matters

At the base of the skull lies an incredibly important neurological crossroads. This area houses key structures that influence nearly every system in the body….. from heart rhythm and digestion to emotional regulation and muscle tension.

NAT is applied along the occipital ridge (the curve at the base of the skull) and along the seven cervical vertebrae of the neck. These regions surround the pathways of the cranial nerves — the direct lines of communication between the brain and the organs, face, throat, shoulders, and digestive tract.

If you’ve ever noticed that stress leads to tight shoulders… or that anxiety can upset digestion… you’ve already experienced how interconnected these pathways are. NAT focuses on this connection point.

The Locus Ceruleus: The Body’s Switching Station

Deep within the base of the brain is a small, bluish cluster of nerve cells called the locus ceruleus. Though tiny, it plays a powerful role in alertness, stress response, and communication between nerve centers.

Think of it as a master switching station. When it is balanced and functioning smoothly, messages flow more clearly between the brain and body. When it is overwhelmed or dysregulated, communication can become strained and symptoms may appear in seemingly unrelated areas.

NAT is designed to gently stimulate this region and encourage more optimal signaling patterns.

The Vagus Nerve: The Great Wanderer

Another key focus of NAT is the vagus nerve (the longest cranial nerve in the body) Its name means “wanderer,” and for good reason. It extends from the brainstem down through the throat, heart, lungs, liver, stomach, and intestines.

The vagus nerve governs much of the parasympathetic nervous system.  The “rest and restore” side of our physiology. This is the system that allows digestion to function, tears to flow, the heart to slow, hormones to regulate, and the body to repair itself.

When the vagal tone is strong, we feel calmer, more grounded, and more resilient.

When it is compromised, the body may stay stuck in stress mode!! ( affecting mood, sleep, immunity, and organ function)

NAT is designed to encourage healthy vagal activity by focusing on the vagal ganglion area at the base of the skull and along the cervical spine.

The Role of Essential Oils in NAT

This technique incorporates specific essential oils selected for their unique aromatic chemistry and their influence on the limbic brain.

  • Frankincense is traditionally associated with clarity and grounding.

  • Valerian, Vetiver, Cedarwood, and Sandalwood are known for their deeply calming, centering properties.

  • Roman Chamomile is often used to support emotional softening and release.

The aromatic molecules interact with the olfactory system, which has direct access to the emotional and regulatory centers of the brain. This makes scent a powerful ally when working with stored stress patterns and neurological tension.

Supporting Neurological Balance

Historically, practitioners have observed NAT being used to support a wide variety of neurological concerns. Some have shared reports of improvements in conditions involving nervous system dysregulation, including movement disorders.

While medical communities still describe certain neurological conditions as “idiopathic” (meaning the root cause remains unclear), many researchers acknowledge the critical role of the brainstem and vagal pathways in these presentations.

NAT does not claim to diagnose, treat, or cure disease. Rather, it seeks to support the body’s own communication systems creating an environment where healing processes may function more efficiently.

Emotional Release & Whole-Body Integration

Because the parasympathetic system is deeply connected to emotional processing, NAT can also be used in sessions focused on emotional release. The body often stores stress in the neck, shoulders, and sacral regions. By working along these pathways, long-held tension patterns may begin to soften.

Many clients describe feeling lighter, clearer, or more regulated after sessions, as though something that had been “stuck” finally moved.

Why Consider NAT?

If you experience:

  • Chronic stress patterns

  • Digestive irregularity

  • Shoulder and neck tension linked to emotional strain

  • Nervous system dysregulation

  • Feeling “wired but tired”

  • A history of neurological imbalance

It may be worth exploring whether your nervous system simply needs support reconnecting its communication pathways and book a NAT with me.

Sometimes the body doesn’t need more force. It needs recalibration. It needs gentle stimulation in the right places. It needs to be reminded how to regulate.

NAT is designed to provide that invitation.

If you’re curious whether this technique may support your own journey toward greater neurological balance and whole-body harmony, I would be honored to guide you through a session and answer any questions you have.

Your nervous system has been carrying you for a lifetime. It may be time to give it intentional care.
